The research project "Runic writing in the Germanic languages (RuneS)" deals with the earliest independently developed writing system in the Germanic languages, the runic script.

It is the aim of the project to describe and analyse runic writing in a comprehensive way, transcending the boundaries of the three groups of runic writing systems. There will be two principal sctions: Runic Graphemics and Runic Text Grammar and Pragmatics. The research data and results of the two sections will be published in the database RuneS-DB at the end of the respective research modules.

The comprehensive basic data on the nature, content and context of the European runic finds are published here as a first version of RuneS-DB.

Scientifically approved data from different sources
RuneS-DB combines our own research data with results and basic data on the European runic finds taken from a large number of sources. In both cases the data have been entered according to description systems developed for this purpose. We place great emphasis on the scientificness and correctness of the data.

Runic finds from different European regions
RuneS does not restrict itself to the individual regions of Europe or to certain rune rows; rather, the basic data on all European runic finds have been compiled. RuneS-DB currently contains 8326 finds with 11525 coordinates on findspots and storage places. This means that detailed maps are easy and quick to create.
